Centennial College

City: Toronto
Province/State: Ontario
College Website: http://www.centennialcollege.ca
Mechanic Programs: Truck & Coach • Heavy Equipment

Heavy Equipment Program Summary:
This program will prepare students for exciting futures as skilled professionals in the heavy equipment field. The in-school training, combined with practical on-the-job experience gained in the co-op work placement provides an excellent start to an apprenticeship.

Successful students will earn an Ontario College Diploma, will have eight months of practical, on-the-job, co-op training at a heavy equipment facility and complete their entire Ontario Apprenticeship in-school curriculum within two years. In addition, students will take courses in advanced electrical/electronics, logistics, plus hoisting and rigging only available at Centennial.

To complete this program, students will spend the first eight months in school, eight months in co-op as a registered apprentice and a final eight months in school. As part of the in-school curriculum, students will train on heavy duty equipment assemblies in fully-equipped heavy duty equipment labs. Students will focus on applied mechanics, vehicle dynamics as well as component design and repair as it applies to the apprenticeship curriculum. In addition, students will take courses in business, English and general education.

Heavy Truck Program Summary:
Centennial has several Truck, Coach and Trailer technician programs including a Freightliner and Volvo/Mack Program. Below is a description of the general Truck Technician Program.

Students who qualify will complete, in 32 weeks, the in-school portion of their apprenticeship training. An additional four weeks will be spent with a potential employer or performing other work-related activities. A combination of theory and lab is delivered on the latest truck and coach technology using a variety of truck and coach manufacturers vehicles and system components. Upon completion, graduates work to complete the on-the-job portion of their apprenticeship with a fleet, transit, dealership or other employers. Apprentices are then eligible to write their provincial Certificate of Qualification exam. A local apprenticeship committee, Automotive Transportation Service Superintendents Association (ATS) will assist perspective candidates in obtaining an apprenticeship contract and job placement upon successful completion.

“Students learn a set of skills and theories at the college. They then get a chance to practise these tasks in the real environment.”
