Province/State: British Columbia
College WebSite: http://www.vcc.bc.ca/
Mechanic Programs: Heavy Truck • Heavy Equipment

Heavy Equipment and Commercial Transport Pre-Apprenticeship Program Summary:

This program originated in 1949 at the Vancouver Vocational Institute. In 1983, the program moved to new facilities at the Broadway campus. For over fifty years the program has placed highly trained graduates in every branch of the industry and is recognized by hundreds of firms throughout BC. In its modern and well-equipped shop, students work on equipment in as close to actual shop conditions as possible to prepare them for their chosen field of interest.

The Heavy Duty/Commercial Transport Program (which is structured in three levels) is an Industry Recognized 9 month entry-level program, which, upon completion, enables students to choose from the following trades: Heavy Duty Mechanic, Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic, Diesel Engine Mechanic and Marine Engineering.

Students successfully completing this program are issued a VCC Heavy Duty/Commercial Transport Combined Foundation Certificate.

Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprenticeship Program:

The Heavy Duty Mechanic training program is designed for the apprentice currently working in the heavy duty equipment industry.

Apprentice training at VCC for heavy duty mechanics is designed to meet the needs of both the student and industry by providing a comprehensive and up-to-date training experience. Upon completion, apprentices return to industry with an increased, comprehensive skill set.

There are four training sessions offered over a four-year period. Levels 1, 2 and 3 are each four and one half weeks in length (180 hours). Level 4 is 6 weeks long (240 hours). Level 1 covers hydraulics and a variety of braking systems. Level 2 advances the apprentice’s skills in servicing diesel engines. Level 3 provides the apprentice with competency in electrical and electronic systems. Level 4 completes the training with students developing skills in power train components and air conditioning systems. Students train in classrooms and shops at VCC’s facility at the Broadway campus. Instruction is provided through lectures to introduce theory and demonstrations to illustrate practical application of the theory. Students then have ample opportunity in the diesel equipment labs to apply their skills and to demonstrate their knowledge. Students supply their own coveralls and safety equipment. Hand tools are supplied while the apprentice is a student at VCC.

Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic Apprentice Program:

This technical training program is designed for the apprentice currently working in the commercial transport industry. Technical training at VCC for commercial transport mechanics is designed to meet the needs of both the student and industry by providing a thorough and up-to-date training experience.
