Mechanic Programs: Heavy Truck • Heavy Equipment

Heavy Equipment and Commercial Transport Foundation Program Summary:

The full-time, 30-week program is competency based covering all theory and practical components for a complement of valuable technical skills.

Heavy Duty Equipment/Commercial Transport technicians are equipped with the skill and knowledge to troubleshoot, repair and maintain all aspects of mobile equipment. Thorough knowledge of electronics, hydraulics and mechanical components is necessary to be a qualified Heavy Duty Equipment/Commercial Transport Technician.

Foundation Students registered with the ITA are able to continue directly into the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprentice Level. For more information about Foundation programs in British Columbia visit the Industry Training Authority (ITA) at www.itabc.ca

Trades learners are encouraged to enhance their employability by enrolling in Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1 and other Workforce & Industry training courses. OFA and Workforce & Industry training courses are scheduled throughout the year at NWCC.

Heavy Duty Equipment Technician/Commercial Transport Mechanic Apprenticeship Program Summary:

Heavy Duty Equipment Technician – Level 1 program provides apprentices with technical training they need to troubleshoot, overhaul, repair and maintain off-road mobile equipment. Apprentices learn to identify and repair problems in structural, mechanical or hydraulic systems.

Indentured apprentices combine on-the-job training with formal classroom technical skills at NWCC to earn journeyperson classification. Students receive provincial apprenticeship curriculum pertinent to the apprenticeship level in which they are enrolled.

If you are an unemployed apprentice or if your employer is anticipating a slow down in work consider taking your next two levels of technical training back-to-back. Trades learners are encouraged to enhance their employability by enrolling in Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1 and other Workforce & Industry training courses. Northwest Community College, established in 1975, serves the northwestern region of British Columbia with centres in ten communities. Approximately 700 of the college’s 1600 annual full-time students attend in Terrace, a further 400 at Prince Rupert, and the remainder attend in Kitimat, Hazelton, Smithers, Houston, Stewart, the Nass Valley and the Queen Charlotte Islands. In addition to regular credit programs, the college enrols an additional 8000 area residents in a variety of extension and continuing education programs.

The academic program offers full-time first and second year of University Credit Arts programs and the first year of Science in Terrace and Prince Rupert. The College is also involved in partnerships with local tribal councils, education societies, adult literacy agencies, school districts and other community agencies. Partnerships are developed to try to meet the unique needs of each community.

Areas of Expertise

Unique programs include Wilderness Guiding Skills, Natural Resources and Integrated Human Service program. Specialties include trades and technology, and community-oriented partnerships.
